LICENSING AND REGISTRATION OF QUALIFIED TEACHERS IN GHANA

As part of the processes for teacher professionalization, the National Teaching Council (NTC) will issue Teachers' license and registration numbers to all qualified teachers in the Ghana Education Service as well as those in private institutions. The licensing and registration exercise will commence in May 2021.

As part of the process, all qualified teachers who were employed before 1 st September 2018 are required to log on to the NTC's Teacher Portal Ghana (TPG)

For the avoidance of doubt, qualified teachers are teachers who have been trained and certified as teachers by accredited colleges and universities that train teachers.

It is to be noted that all teachers who were employed after 31 st August 2018 are required to pass the Ghana Teacher Li-censure Examination to merit the license and registration number. Thus, their provisional license shall be replaced with a full license during the exercise.

It is further to be noted that all qualified teachers who fail to avail themselves for this licensing and registration exercise shall lose their right to practice as teachers in Ghana in accordance with section 64 (I) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020, Act 1023.

NOTE:

1. Those who have registered already and gotten 100% are not included in the present registration. Most teachers in this group have been given their new Registered Numbers via SMS.

2. Those who registered but couldn't reach 100% must go back to the portal and complete. They will receive new Registration Numbers afterwards

3. Non professionals will be registered after this exercise and issued temporary license.

4. Data on those recruited after August 2018 is being worked on. They can log in from  Monday to update their information.

5. Those who have passed GTLE but are not yet employed can also register from Monday. They have to pay Ghc 200 for the full license.

6. For GES Staff NTC has already pre-populated some basic information about them on the portal. Please ensure that your name on the portal tallies with what is on your professional certificate.

INDUCTION OF NEWLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS (NQTS) 2021

NTC organizes induction program for newly qualified teachers (trained teachers) who successfully passed the Ghana Teacher Licensure Exams to usher them into the teaching profession. The induction program serves as on the job training where the newly qualified teachers are exposed to the nitty-grity of the profession. It is required that NQTs undertake activities determined by the National Teaching Council so that they will be considered fit for the job.

The National Teaching Council in exercising its mandate as per the Education Regulatory Bodies ACT 2020, ACT 1023 in collaboration with the Ministry of Education is leading the course of professionalizing teachers and improving education delivery in Ghana. The need to professionalize teachers and build a strong teacher workforce is consistent with the MDG goal 4 which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The drive for the professionalization of teachers in the education sub-sector must begin from where they are trained.
